I finally made Senior superlatives…20 years too late.

Even though most of you will  not believe this, I graduated 20 years ago.

(Cough, cough.)

Yes, 20 years ago.

As in, 1990. The year of the Milli Vanilli scandal, the Simpsons and Seinfeld television debut, the freeing of Nelson Mandela and the start of the Persian Gulf War.

I turned 18. My parents bought me a brand new car, a white Dodge Shadow, that was then dubbed by my friends as “A Freak of Nature”…cause there is no such thing as a white shadow.

It was a time of tanning beds, tight rolled jeans, sequined prom dresses and Aqua Net hair spray.

Now, if there was one thing I was focused on in high school, it would be the whole hair situation. Lord knows I wasn’t worried about my SAT’s or college admission applications but the big hair thing…well, that was important.  Hello?

And so the majority of my high school years were filled with hot rollers, a can of Aqua Net and a blow dryer…cause only maximum hair height could only be achieved with the aid of a dryer.

I never made senior superlatives, but 20 years later, they regretted that crap and bestowed upon me the accolade I should have recieved back in the day….”Biggest Hair.”

Yes people, read it and weep!

I had the biggest hair in high school and it has been confirmed 20 years later by my peers.

To reward me for all my effort and their lack of acknowledgement then, they bestowed upon me the most fitting prize, a can of Aqua Net Hair Spray.

I know you be jealous.

I remember the big hair days well lol. The big wings on the side you had to spray, hold out while you blowdried then spray again. I can still smell that stinking aqua net as well. Boy, the good old days!!!!!

Somewhere in my stuff, I have a picture of Little Sister on the night of your senior homecoming and I swear that her bangs are at LEAST six inches high- but are we going on height or overall general size here? It's a wonder that none of you accidentally set fire to yourselves. You would've gone up in a giant fireball from all of the hairspray and alcohol-based mousse- and the Airedaleparents' housekeeper cursed y'all regularly under her breath as she tried to scrub the Aqua Net residue off the surfaces in our bathroom. The other thing I recall from this era is your clique's collective overuse of perfume; I remember Dad announcing one night after ablutions for some dance or other as he went up the stairs: “It smells like a Parisian cathouse up here!” (Bill Shatner has nothing on Dr. AiredaleParent for $#*! that dads say.)

    MT,
Your dad is a saint to have put up with all the mayhem from me and Husie! I know we shaved a couple of years of his life with all the worry we caused.

I miss the hairspray days just a little bit. I had a child ask me today why my hair wasn't, “crunchy”.

I can still remember the magic you would perform after taking off the 150 degree band helmet and while the rest of us were attempting to look halfway girly, you would be working those hot rollers and hair spray and would look like a million dollars. Oh how we envied your hair back then….LOL Enjoy your award! You look great

I did see your hair from the balcony of Island Sunrise while you were out chatting with my sister Brenda! I have to say her hair and yours has nothing on my big hair! I hope to meet you next time you are in Gulf Shores. You have a great blog and a beautiful family!
